The best incontinence pads
Epica Premium Quality Bed Pad

You can’t beat the Amazon price for a bed pad of this quality. At 34″ by 52″, this waterproof pad is extra-long to fit lengthwise on a single or twin mattress or crosswise for protection on larger beds. It’s not fitted, which makes it easy to put on and take off. The quilted three-layer fabric, made of 50/50 polyester and cotton, feels comfortably soft. It’s gentle enough on sensitive skin to place it over or under a fitted sheet without causing anyone to overheat as they sleep.
The non-slip backing is immune to tossing and turning, ensuring the pad does not bunch up, which can create major discomfort for a sleeper. Plus, the backing is made of polyester-backed vinyl—not plastic—which means no annoying crinkling sounds! The pad’s inner core draws in and locks moisture away from the skin. Its absorbent layer holds an awful lot of liquid and won’t break down, even after continuous washes.

Dry Defender Washable Waterproof Mattress Pad

Dry Defender’s super-absorbent waterproof bed pads are available in many sizes, designs (flat or tuck in), and quantities. Here, we review the three-pack of flat, 24” x 36” underpads. Like the RMS pads above, these pads also offer four layers of protection and absorption. The blue bottom layer serves as a slip-resistant waterproof barrier. Sandwiched between the soft absorbent padded layers, the vinyl layer is 100 percent waterproof and woven into the fabric to block liquid softly and silently (read: no crinkly sound). Another inner core layer is made of a super-absorbent polyester and rayon blend. Finally, the top layer’s stain-resistant twill facing is made of quilted polyester for comfort. A high-absorbency option, these pads can hold six cups of fluid, which is three times the amount an average adult bladder can hold.
The quilted top is soft enough to sleep on the pad directly or place under a fitted sheet (waterproof side facing down). No matter how much the pads are washed and dried, the knit barrier will stay soft and leak-proof. Plus, these washable waterproof mattress pads come with a 100 percent satisfaction guarantee for a risk-free purchase.

Brosive Disposable Incontinence Bed Pads

The only disposable incontinence bed pads on our review, these breathable babies feature a super-absorbing system of five protective layers. The underpad’s diamond-quilted design diverts up to five cups of liquid from the surface to the quilted inner absorbing layer, where it quickly gets locked in so that skin, bed, and bedding all stay dry. The blue non-permeable back sheet has a film that keeps the pad in place without adhesives that might ruin your sheets. These sheet protectors, which come in packs of 30, 35, or 40, are waterproof and leak-proof to prevent moisture seepage and staining. However, the soft, quiet material doesn’t contain any irritating chemicals, salts, or dyes. The strong construction promises that the pad won’t stretch or tear, even when wet.

Our best incontinence pads guide
Still not sure which incontinence pad option is right for your needs? In addition to checking product reviews, here are some things to consider before purchasing to better care for your senior loved one living with adult incontinence—and provide you both with some much-needed peace of mind.
Care
When washing a reusable pad, don’t use fabric softener, bleach, or Oxyclean, or you may deteriorate the material and affect the absorbency. Wash in cold water and dry on low. Since these pads are made to absorb liquid, know that washers sometimes have a hard time getting all the water out during the spin cycle.
Disposable vs. reusable
Reusable/washable pads are more cost-effective and less wasteful than disposable ones. But if you’d rather toss than wash, go for disposable.
Size
Many of these pads come in different dimensions, so pay attention to what size you’re ordering to make sure it is big (or small and discreet) enough to suit your needs.
Material
Those with allergies should opt for a bed pad made of hypoallergenic fabrics. Stay away from products that contain plastic, which can make an annoying crinkling noise. Most pads can be placed on top of the mattress, under the fitted sheet. If using over the fitted sheet, make sure the top layer of fabric is made out of comfortable materials, like microfiber or a quilted polyester or polyblend. Make sure the product is breathable to prevent overheating during the night.
Non-slip
Make sure to choose a pad with non-slip backing. Otherwise, you’ll end up with a wad of fabric after just a bit of tossing and turning.
Placement
Make sure you put the waterproof, non-slip side of the incontinence pad facing down on the mattress or sheet. Typically, pads should be positioned across the bed with the long edges going from side to side (instead of head to foot) for the best protection.
Absorbency
While some pads claim to hold 6 cups of liquids and others are maximum absorbency and go up to 10, remember the human bladder only holds 1 to 2 cups of urine, so the difference between a pad that holds 6 cups and one that will hold 10 is minimal. Choose pads with the absorbency levels that are most appropriate for your senior.
